Environment, Health and Safety

We are committed to excellence in environment, health and safety (EHS) and consider environmental protection, prevention of occupational illness and prevention of work injuries as pillars of corporate responsibility.

Neuland recognises EHS stewardship as an integral part of the system, it does to run its business and continually evaluates EHS related aspects and hazards as part of organizational decision-making process. EHS management systems drive the initiatives in areas of resource conservation, pollution prevention and prevention of work related ill health and injury. Through effective implementation of EHS management system, we are controlling various EHS indicators, viz., freshwater consumption, waste water generation, waste generation, CO2 emissions, energy consumption, fuel consumption, wok related injury and ill-heath cases.

Performance of EHS management system is being reviewed through structured “EHS MIS” by top management every month. Developed internal mechanism to ensure sustainable EHS management system such as Corporate EHS guidelines/SOP to harmonise EHS functions at all sites, EHS Audit & Gap analysis to comply as intended. Today, EHS is an integral part of Change Management System to ensure all activities are implemented with EHS consideration.

Environment

To address the EHS related aspects and hazards, we have formulated EHS Policy, which is implemented in a continual and systematic manner through ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 45001:2007 management systems. EHS Policy communicates collective intentions of all ‘Neulanders’ in key areas of EHS compliance, environment, health, safety, continual improvement. All employees are trained to develop required competencies and their performances are monitored. All employees are expected to take personal responsibility for meeting the requirement of the EHS management systems and EHS policy acts as a guiding principle for identifying, analysing and mitigating any environmental impacts and/or safety and health risks arising from our activities, products and services.

The manufacturing units of the Company are equipped with pollution control facilities viz., Chemical & Biological treatment, Stripper, Multi-effect evaporators, Vertical thin film dryer and Reverse osmosis facilities. Effluents generated in our units are treated in these effluent treatment facilities and treated effluents are recycled to become Zero Liquid Discharge System. We continually invest in pollution control and safety related infrastructures.

Neuland has implemented co-processing of certain hazardous wastes as fuel substitutes in authorized cement plants in their kilns to support energy resource conservation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This beneficial use of hazardous wastes has helping environment in conserving precious energy resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Regular environmental monitoring is carried out to ensure compliance with permitted norms.

Health & Safety

We take utmost care for health and safety of all persons working with the Company and are committed to protect health of persons working with us and protect environment by actively seeking to identify means and ways to minimize resource consumptions and waste generations. At Neuland, EHS starts with R&D. While developing processes at R&D, we adopt the concept of “Green Chemistry” and people friendly processes to minimise operational risk and hazards.

Through this approach, input materials like chemicals, solvents, fresh water, energy and process conditions are optimized aiming to minimize environmental impact and health and safety hazards. Once processes are developed, process improvement initiatives are taken to maximize the efficiency and reduce impact on environment.

Neuland has established a full-fledged occupational health centre with physician, support staff and required infrastructure. The occupational health team is spearheading initiatives like regular health check-ups, exposure assessment, work place monitoring, health awareness campaigns and medical surveillance program aiming to make our work environment comfortable, safe and healthy for employees. Pre-employment, periodical and product specific health check-ups have been custom made for the nature of work to strengthen our medical surveillance program.

Hazard & Operability (HazOp) and Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRA) studies are carried out for processes and activities to minimize health and safety risks from such processes and activities. Any incidents are followed up through a structured incident investigation process and the recommendations on corrective and preventive actions shared and implemented in all locations aiming to prevent recurrence of similar incidents. We follow a robust internal audit and reporting system to address compliance issues promptly. We also have a Night Duty Officers team to closely monitor operations during silent hours.

Biodiversity Statement

To mainstream the concept of biodiversity across Neuland’s value chain and adopt a precautionary approach for sustainable management of biodiversity in all decision-making processes so that the earth’s variety of life is ensured in and around the business units of Neuland’s. And also aims to adopt systematic consideration of local threats to biodiversity beyond the company’s business activities.

Neuland does not have its manufacturing sites near any named biodiversity sites. Accordingly, we do not foresee any immediate impact to biodiversity. We would continue to monitor biodiversity sites (if any, listed in future) from time to time. Habitat protection is recognized as a prerequisite for species survival and thus there is a need to protect their habitat and ensure the survival of species in the ecosystem. Business and societal activities can adversely affect habitats and endanger biodiversity. We recognize the need to protect and conserve the natural resources. Neuland is committed to limit its environmental impacts and would conduct relevant biodiversity studies if applicable. However, all the manufacturing sites of Neuland’s are located in the notified industrial development estates.
